How It Ends

This poem was inspired by some of my favorite beautiful music, including the subject title “How It Ends” by DeVotchKa.

A Place Inside

The chords feel like home

Melodic sequences sweep through a place never touched

Soften the rough edges

Break down formidable barriers

Who knew I lived there?

Underneath a crusted mask all along

Perhaps I felt its itch from time to time

But I thought it the price to pay

For normalcy

But here –

Here I am

Soft and supple beneath the shell

But alive

Bounding through vast terrain without inhibition

Can you follow me there?

Or do you prefer the shell?
